We don't subscribe to the belief that "history is bunk," because what we
are and what
we do are products of what we were and what we
did. Here is the opportunity to see a
little of what we have already
done.
CHARITY DRAGON BOAT RACES 2006 & 2007
Five great events. It's still quite tiring just thinking about them. If you have the stamina,
you can read all about these Classic Events by clicking on the links just up to the left below the buttons!
18th December 2005 HOW WE PACKED UP CHRISTMAS!
Well, not really! But we did join with the Southport Visiter to pack and
distribute Christmas parcels and gifts for Southport people. Click on Santa to
go to our Club Website for the full story.25th June 2005 SOUTHPORT CHARITY CARNIVAL - VICTORIA PARK
We've moved on! This time to Victoria Park, and the Southport Charity Carnival. This time we aimed really high, with our helium filled racing balloons riding those thermals and Reaching for the Sky. Fortunately there weren't too many Bandits - the squadrons of hunter-killer pigeons had been vectored to another sector - and our magnificent balloons headed for wherever the prevailing wind would take them!
The picture shows three of our trusty ground crew preparing some of the racing
balloons for launch...
...while the apprentice Air Traffic Controllers learn the finer points
of communicating with high flyers. We have pointed out to the staff that,
ideally, the megaphone should be pointed in the other direction...
...while later the same day, incoming Southport Rotary President David Brayshaw
was snapped undertaking a strenuous piloting test - looping the loop, no less
- watched by incoming Southport Lions President Jean Tabron.11th June 2005 SOUTHPORT FUN FEST - PRINCES PARK
at the bit - or something like that! Southport Rotarians took racing to the people on Saturday 11th June, with the most amazing electronic Donkey Derby you've ever seen!
Contained within a small but perfectly formed caravan, the entire show was seen
at the second annual Southport Fun Fest, held in Prince's Park. Hundreds of
people came, saw, and enjoyed the fun, and incidentally did a sterling job of
raising money for charitable causes. Even the weather was kind, with the going
described as being slightly on the dry side of firm. And although we can't prove it, without a sound track, we can promise that our Hon Sec, seen here, was not practicing for the next Karaoke Kompetition
And to prove that it really was a Fun Fest, we will put the Editorial safety on the line by attaching this picture, which shows the Rotarian Organiser of the Donkey Derby doing
his bit to make the prizes fit the bill.

29th & 30th May 2005 Flying High
Bright idea indeed: green gazebo, yellow jacketed Rotarians, and a bright blue
sky brought a range of colourful notes to the dry end of the Pier, as Bank
Holiday Visitors were encouraged to try their
luck, or, more accurately, their
balloon's luck.
Now unless you are a practiced hand at balloon racing, you might be a tad
surprised at just how far these fragile items can travel. We are still waiting
on this year's results, of course, but last year the winning balloon travelled
as far as East Anglia (indeed, several did) and the year before a passport would
have been needed, as the balloon travelled
as far as northern Germany.
