Southport Rotary’s Answer To The Last Night of the Proms
Friday 12th February 2010 saw more than a hundred Rotarians, partners and guests,
gathered at the Royal Clifton Hotel in Southport for the 2010 Ladies’ Night, that
night when tribute is paid to the help, support and encouragement given throughout
the year by the ladies.
This year, the special theme for the evening was ‘The Last Night of the Proms’ made
possible by a sterling performance from the Hesketh Bank Silver Band.
The evening started with a most excellent, and traditional, meal of local hill-reared
beef, with Lancashire Pudding (almost the same as Yorkshire Pudding, but made on
the left hand side of the Pennines - the right side, of course!)
The President, Rtn Peter Downham, welcomed the ladies and guests, including visiting
Rotary Ambassadorial Scholar Megan Selbach-Allen from Washington state in the USA,
who is studying Disease Dynamics at Liverpool University. The replly, on behalf of
the ladies and guests, was given by Mrs Liz Downham, wife of President Peter.
And then, of course, the band struck up, with a selection of melodies from Abba to
the collected Sea Shanties, traditional on Last Nights!
But, of course, however interesting the slide show, it cannot convey anything of
the musical flavour of the evening; the enthusiasm generated by repeated choruses
of Jerusalem, Land of Hope and Glory, and Rule, Britannia!
Not to worry! The marvels of modern technology can whisk you back to there and then.
